Understanding Assessment Scales of Traumatic Brain Injury:

Rancho Los Amigos and FIM score

Presented By:

Ahmed Aly Sayed, PT, Rehab Director, Southern Crescent Traumatic Brain Injury

Southern Crescent TBI is a 40 bed in-patient rehabilitation Center located in Henry County. SCTBI is devoted to providing medical and rehabilitation services to individuals who have suffered a TBI.

A person with a traumatic brain injury(TBI) will progress at his/her own rate, depending on many different factors including severity of brain damage, age, location of the injury, and length of time since the brain injury has occurred. The medical profession uses various scales and scores to assess patients who have suffered a TBI. The two tools most commonly used are the Rancho Los Amigos and the FIM Score.

During this seminar, Mr. Aly will present the different levels of cognition through the Rancho Los Amigos Scale that patients with a TBI may experience including paying attention, responding, being aware of one's surrounding, planning, problem solving, and memory skills. Also, Mr. Aly will discuss the FIM score in detail and how and why it is administered by physicians, therapists, nurses, and social workers to help in evaluating the patient, monitoring progress, and helping to develop a discharge plan that is appropriate for a patient who suffered a TBI based on the Ranchero Scale results.

Overview

87% of seniors lose $600 on average by not reviewing their Medicare plans each year. Medicare is always changing, and it is important to be properly informed about your plan, and the costs that go with it. Case managers and social workers often see this first-hand with the families that they work with. Either their plans are too expensive, or they aren’t getting the coverage and care that they need. Each of our Medicare Advisors have helped thousands of seniors save money, and feel confident in their Medicare plan choices. In this seminar, you will learn how to answer important questions for your patients, and how to help weigh out the thousands of Medicare plan combinations. Updates to Medicare in 2017 will be discussed, as well as how to help prepare your patient for the open enrollment season which begins in October.

CEUs available: 1 ethic or core hour for social workers (GA NASW); 1 contact hour for case managers (CCMC) 1 contact hour for.

Choosing a Surrogate Health Care Decision Maker: An Ethical Discussion

Most healthcare professionals understand the importance of selecting a Surrogate Decision Maker for Health Care; in fact, many social workers and case managers, particularly in the health care field, frequently encourage clients to complete an Advanced Directive for health care. Danielle Humphrey, JD, CELA of Hurley Elder Care Law will detail these and various other documents that may be recommended for families/individuals receiving care to consider or the may have already been executed: Living Wills, Guardianship Appointments, Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Directives will be explained. Ms. Humphrey will discuss factors to be considered when a person designates a surrogate decision maker and ethical issues surrogates themselves may face. Guidelines for making health care decisions on behalf of another person will be offered. Through a series of case discussions, the presenter will discuss how likely a surrogate’s decisions are to match the wishes of the person who appointed him/her.
